i'm shorter than when i started working in the creative industry. but i'm a whole lot wiser and braver. when you've done this as long as i have, you tend to pick up a few lessons along the way. some of the more memorable lessons are that in order to be truly creative, you need to be a conduit for information, and secondly, that only you can truly understand the end result of your creative output; no-one else will ever "get" everything that went into that idea, so love your work, yourself.
creativity to me is both work and play. and in order for work to be fruitful, there needs to be an element of play. i like nothing more than a creative challenge, so let's play together...
i've worked in many creative disciplines, acquiring multiple skills along the way. my greatest skill though, is problem solving. i love it. i love seeing a challenge and through creative reasoning finding the most elegant solution.
i've worked as creative director for clearwater, red pepper, urban brew, and wunderbrand, headed up the research and development department for a mobile services provider, made promos, made logos, made tv, created art, designed sets, styled presenters, developed talent, delivered presentations, won awards, produced corporate videos, edited music videos, collaborated and delivered; but above all, i've had fun flexing my creative muscle.
i graduated with a bada(hons) from the university of the witwatersrand somewhere near the turn of the century. instead of only doing four majors, i did six including a new course which i actually taught at the same time. i introduced desktop editing to the television department, and won every prize there was to win at the end of my degree. and performed for the forgotten angle theatre company. and made video art. and performed at the grahamstown festival. and that was all a long time ago. but it does demonstrate that i'm able to think academically. oh, and i have a degree in psychology too.
i've since also received a number of certifications, but plumbing isn't one of them.

1nando's homecoming app when nando's moved their head office, i helped create an app to facilitate the staff's needs; everything from push notifications reminding staff to label their boxes, to a map of how to get there, and even location-specific information about the area they were moving to was offered. apps; they seem deceptively easy when you begin... i also came up with a way to host it outside of the relevant app stores, not easy.-12kia motors kia were developing a training program for their after-sales staff and needed a name and logo for it. i came up with the idea of calling it "kiai" which is a martial arts battle cry, which also shares "ki" and its meaning with the motorcar brand. © wunderbrand 2014kia motors kia were developing a training program for their after-sales staff and needed a name and logo for it. i came up with the idea of calling it "kiai" which is a martial arts battle cry, which also shares "ki" and its meaning with the motorcar brand. -+-123xxi annual south african music awards the "samas" had been criticised in recent years for not living up to expectations, and i was invited to pitch on the show and reinvigorate the event. my approach was to re-establish the awards as the definitive music awards in the country, and this started with the "sama" brand. i decided to reposition it by moving away from ever referring to the brand as sama, but rather "the annual south african music awards; a subtle yet meaningful change.xxi annual south african music awards the naming convention was carried through all aspects of the event, even to the chairman's speech at the press conference for the nominee announcement. breaking with previous years where it would be sama 20 for instance, roman numerals were used to further differentiate the event's branding.xxi annual south african music awards xxi became a strong motif across all design, with the housing device creating numerous opportunities in both the design elements, and the actual tv show as well. i chose a square as the housing device since that is the format that album artwork comes in )either on vinyl, cd, or digital download) and at the end of the day, one of the objectives was to make music the hero.-+-12xxi annual south african music awards in the vein of "doing things differently", i encouraged the team to push the boundaries when it came to the television production and the live event. this resulted in unique collaborations musically, the use of two steadicams, not relying on the safety of a wide fed from a jib since there wasn't one, an almost completely monochromatic wardrobe and beautiful graphic sequences using live action macro textures.xxi annual south african music awards the promo campaign picked up on social media's "agent xxi" campaign and were used to reveal the host as well as push tune-in to the televised live show. xxi annual south african music awards the live show was created with the television audience in mind as opposed to the live event simply being filmed. the use of steadicams and a cable cam allowed for unique angles to be filmed, and thorough performance direction ensured a slick production where it mattered. -+-1xxi annual south african music awards every year there is a magazine produced to accompany the event, and this year i chose to go with a square format magazine to carry through the housing device shape and continue the idea of album artwork.xxi annual south african music awards the magazine contained both information regarding the awards, such as a list of the nominees, as well as original content that i wrote to compliment the overall creative and strategic direction for the event.xxi annual south african music awards the magazine also served as an advertising opportunity, and the square format and housing device worked well across this content as well.-+--+
not x chris saunders building on the graphic design elements from the poster, i created a very simple credit sequence for the not and chris saunders collaboration film shown at the exhibition. -facet teaser for support on her european tour in 2013, i created a series of video pieces to form part of the show for candice wyatt-minter's facet collection. this is the teaser for the collection, and the rest can be seen on my vimeo account. -mtvbase.com this was a promo i made for mtvbase promoting the online presence. it was the first promo i made in apple motion. -comedy central eddie izzard campaign when eddie izzard toured south africa, comedy central had a festival of all of his live shows. running on the youtube video for the deathstar canteen, i animated 5 lego re-enactments from each of his live shows. -vitruvian collection for candice wyatt-minter's first international show, her collection was based on the vitruvian principles. i created supporting video work for each of the different cuts, looking at different aspects of art that had been created using the golden ratio. this is the teaser for the collection, and the rest can be seen on my vimeo account. --+
bombay babe this shot was filmed handheld on a 5d at 25fps. having selected the moment, i stabilised the clip and slowed it down to 7% in fcp x and the result is pretty impressive. -nozinja - tsekeleke aside from getting to create something for warp records, which has always been an ambition of mine, i got to make something where i was given free-reign to go as crazy with the effects as i wanted to. in fact, after an initial viewing, warp replied that they wanted me to push it even further. directed by chris saunders, the footage was shot at 5k and 2k on red as raw files, which were handled natively on an imac in fcp x with upto 8 layers of comping at a time. all compositing was done in final cut as well, and the rough low-fi feel was deliberate. -comedy central april announcement still one of my favourite promos for comedy central, i came up with this idea as an april fools joke for comedy central. the editing and text are really frenetic and help support the script i wrote, and i was really impressed with the mix that brett at earcandy did on this. --+
123bombay baby - the business of design presentation talking on pop-up stores at the business of design conference, i got to create a keynote that truly took my idea that presentations are a form of theatre on to the stage. instead of the typical keywords on screen or infographic, i explored the topics in ariane's presentation visually creating imagery cues instead of text.bombay baby - the business of design presentation this slide represents how so many people are always asking when ariane is going to grow up and open a store of her own. the short answer; she won't.bombay baby - the business of design presentation my favourite slide of the presentation had to do with curiosity, and how that is one of the reasons for the success of pop-up shops. i love working with someone who isn't afraid to take such risks.-+--+
